Dhaka, Nov 6 (V7N)- Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has accused the ruling BNP government of moving towards establishing a fascist and one-party regime, alleging that it is disregarding the outcome of the referendum and paving the way for authoritarian rule.

He made the remarks at a discussion meeting organised in observance of National Revolution and Solidarity Day in the capital's Moghbazar area on Friday morning.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman alleged that the BNP was taking steps that could lead the country towards fascism, including politicising key positions in the administration. He also claimed that although the opposition wanted to make Parliament functional, the government's actions showed little sign of goodwill.

Warning the government against repeating the mistakes of its predecessors, he said the BNP could face a similar fate if it failed to learn from the past.

Comparing fascism to a virus, the Jamaat chief said the BNP was moving towards what he described as blatant authoritarianism. He warned that revolutions could return at different points in history.

He further said people had voted in favour of reforms rather than simply constitutional amendments, arguing that the public's verdict on reform must be respected. Referring to the introduction of the caretaker government system in the past, he said the people's demand for reform should likewise be accepted.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman also accused the Awami League of initiating the killing of freedom fighters and extrajudicial killings after independence. He said Jamaat-e-Islami's movement would continue to keep the country free from what he called the influence of hegemony.

Speaking at the same meeting, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar accused the government of seeking to establish fascist rule through what he described as unilateral constitutional amendments.

He warned that the BNP government could face an unwanted downfall if it did not abandon what he called its efforts to establish one-party rule.
