Georgia-Tennessee Border, Nov 06 (V7N)- Severe flash floods have devastated communities along the border between the US states of Georgia and Tennessee after heavy rainfall submerged towns, roads and homes on Thursday (November 5).

Floodwaters rose to between six and seven feet in some areas, leaving residents stranded. Rescue teams have been carrying out operations by boat and air to evacuate people trapped by the rising water.

The situation became more complicated after lightning strikes triggered fires in several structures, according to the information provided.

Weather officials urged residents in affected areas to move quickly to safe locations on higher ground. Meanwhile, the governor declared a state of emergency in four Georgia counties to facilitate the response to the flooding.

As floodwaters began to recede on Thursday afternoon, some residents returned to their homes to assess the damage. They found streets covered with floating rubbish and debris, while goods inside shops had been damaged by the floodwaters.

The flooding has left homes, businesses and infrastructure damaged across the affected border communities.
