DHAKA, 17 (V7N)— Iranian Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr. Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi paid a courtesy call on Leader of the Opposition and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman on Tuesday at his office in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. The ambassador was accompanied by Iranian Embassy First Counsellor Esrafil Amiri Gorzaddini and Cultural Counsellor Mahdi Molars.

According to a press release, the meeting was held in a warm and cordial atmosphere. Discussions centered on the longstanding friendly ties between Bangladesh and Iran and ways to expand bilateral cooperation in trade and investment, education and cultural exchanges, healthcare, and other matters important to the Muslim Ummah.

Dr. Jahanabadi congratulated Dr. Shafiqur Rahman on becoming Leader of the Opposition after the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election and commended Jamaat-e-Islami for its ideological and intellectual contributions to politics. 

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman expressed condolences for Iranian citizens killed in the recent war, conveying grief over the extensive human and material losses and praying for peace for the deceased. He thanked Iran for signing a peace agreement aimed at accelerating a ceasefire and praised Tehran’s constructive role in peace efforts. He voiced hope that the agreement would hold and help ensure regional stability, adding that Iran would continue strengthening ties with neighboring Muslim countries and that Bangladesh-Iran relations would grow stronger.

The two sides also discussed forming a Parliamentary Friendship Group, launching direct Dhaka-Tehran flights, and cooperating on medical tourism. Dr. Shafiqur Rahman proposed setting up a world-class hospital in Bangladesh with Iranian government support.

The Iranian ambassador welcomed the existing friendly relations and expressed Iran’s interest in elevating bilateral ties through deeper cooperation in trade, education, culture, and people-to-people contact. He reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to expanding collaboration with Bangladesh across multiple sectors, including development.

Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Opposition Leader Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman, MP, and Foreign Affairs Advisory Committee member Ali Ahmad Mabrur were also present.
