SYLHET, July 31 (V7N) — National Citizen Party (NCP) North Region Chief Coordinator Sarjis Alam has alleged that his party leaders and activists were attacked by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) activists during a visit to Golapganj in Sylhet.
Speaking to journalists at Sylhet Circuit House at around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sarjis Alam said attacks on NCP programmes and attempts to block their movements were signs of an "authoritarian approach."
"The attack on NCP leaders and obstructing our movement show a return to authoritarian politics," he said, alleging that BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman was following a path similar to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
According to Sarjis Alam, NCP leaders went to Golapganj to meet families of those killed during the 2024 mass uprising. He alleged that after their arrival, a group of people chanting slogans such as "Jia's soldiers unite" attacked their vehicles with rods, bricks and stones.
He said one of their vehicles was damaged and alleged that a young NCP activist named Alif, aged 18, suffered serious eye injuries after being hit during the attack.
Sarjis Alam also criticised the role of police, alleging that law enforcement personnel present at the scene failed to stop the attackers. He demanded an investigation and the arrest of those responsible.
Earlier on Thursday, an NCP convoy came under attack near Noor Mansion in front of Golapganj Municipality gate after a meeting with families of victims of the 2024 July uprising. Witnesses said a group of youths surrounded the convoy and chanted slogans against the NCP. A vehicle's window was damaged during the incident.
Golapganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shabed Ali said no one was injured in the incident and that NCP leaders left the area safely with police assistance.
The NCP leader later alleged in a social media post that BNP activists were responsible for the attack and accused them of vandalising the vehicles.
However, the allegations could not be independently verified immediately. BNP or its student wing leaders have not issued any official statement regarding the incident.
