Pabna, Feb 7 (V7N) — Local authorities are reviewing reports of clashes that occurred during election campaigning in Sujanagar upazila of Pabna-2 constituency on Saturday, following allegations of obstruction and physical altercations involving rival political activists.
According to hospital and local sources, five people — including two women — were admitted to Sujanagar Upazila Health Complex with injuries after incidents reported around midday in Raipur Majhpara of Manikhat Union and in Saidpur under Ahmedpur Union. The injured include local Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists.
Those receiving treatment were identified as Hafez Rafiqul Islam, Hafez Aminul Islam Shimul, Maulana Inamul Haque, and female activists Marzia Khatun and Firoza Begum.
Witnesses and party representatives said tensions arose when a group of Jamaat leaders and supporters were campaigning door-to-door, leading to confrontations with activists from another political party. Accounts from both sides suggest the situation escalated quickly, resulting in injuries to several individuals.
Additional disruptions to campaigning were reported in parts of Sujanagar municipality and Ahmedpur Union, where student activists were also allegedly prevented from continuing their activities.
In response, Jamaat-e-Islami women activists organized a brief protest march in Sujanagar bazar area, calling for a peaceful campaign environment and accountability for those involved.
Assistant Returning Officer for Pabna-2 constituency, Mir Rasheduzzaman, said election officials had received information about three separate incidents in Sujanagar.
“We have already initiated monitoring and a drive in connection with the reports. If written complaints are submitted, legal steps will be taken in accordance with the law,” he told reporters.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and candidates continued election campaigning on Saturday across three constituencies in Netrakona district — Netrakona-3, Netrakona-4 and Netrakona-5 — using the party’s “Dharipalla” (Scales) symbol.
Rallies, which began in the morning and continued throughout the day, were attended by senior party leaders including Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Maulana ATM Ma’sum and members of the central executive committee.
Speakers at the gatherings called on voters to support what they described as clean governance, urging rejection of corruption, violence and intimidation through the ballot on February 12. Thousands of supporters from district and upazila levels joined the events, according to organizers.
