Dhaka, Oct 30 (V7N)- Eight like-minded political parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission (EC) on Thursday, urging the organization of a five-point referendum within November. The memorandum was handed over after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin.

Speaking after the meeting, Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Abdul Halim said the referendum must be held in November, and emphasized that it cannot be conducted on the same day as the national elections. He added that a new program will be announced on November 3 after monitoring the situation.

Halim also stated that while some parties have requested amendments to the amended Representation of the People Order (RPO), the amended RPO should be implemented exactly as it stands. He stressed that a level playing field must be ensured for the upcoming elections.

Earlier in the day, around 12 noon, Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists staged a procession from Agargaon intersection to the Election Commission. At the pre-march rally, party leaders reiterated that elections should be held in February, and the legal basis of the July Charter must be established through a referendum by November.
