Dhaka, May 19 (V7N) – The National Citizens Party (NCP) has strongly condemned the arrest and imprisonment of popular film actress Nusrat Faria, calling the move a "mockery of the judicial process" and warning of its implications on the credibility of the July genocide trial.
In a press release issued on Monday, Saleh Uddin Sifat, Joint Member Secretary (Office) of the NCP, stated that Faria’s arrest in a case related to an alleged attempted murder during the recent anti-discrimination student movement was part of a "show-off and trumped-up case" designed to distract from more pressing issues of justice.
“The judicial process is being turned into a farce,” the statement said. “Those directly involved in the July massacre remain untouched, while fabricated charges are being brought against others to trivialize the trial of genocide.”
Faria was detained by Immigration Police on Sunday at Shahjalal International Airport while attempting to travel to Thailand. She was later shown arrested in a case filed at Bhatara Police Station and sent to Kashimpur Women’s Central Jail following a court order.
The NCP criticized the apparent double standards, pointing out that former President Abdul Hamid, allegedly involved in the July coup, recently left the country without hindrance. “The identities of the 626 individuals sheltered in various cantonments after the coup remain undisclosed,” the statement read. “Many key figures in the massacre continue their anti-citizen activities openly on social media and in public.”
The party also expressed frustration over the lack of progress in prosecuting the perpetrators of the July genocide, noting that although the interim government has announced the formation of International Crimes Tribunal-2, no official notification has yet been issued.
“We want to see visible progress in the genocide trial process by next July,” the NCP demanded. “The interim government must take immediate and decisive action to ensure justice.”
The party further urged law enforcement agencies to act with caution in registering cases, stressing the need to curb “case trading” and politically motivated prosecutions.
