Dhaka, May 18 (V7N) – Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has reiterated its call for a clear roadmap for free and fair elections, urging swift consensus among political stakeholders to resolve the ongoing national crisis. The statement came during a meeting with the National Consensus Commission held at the LD Hall of the National Parliament Building on Sunday morning.

Speaking to reporters before the meeting, Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher said, “In the first meeting, we reached consensus on some issues, while others remained unresolved. This time, we have reached consensus on many new issues which will be discussed today.”

He emphasized that Jamaat is approaching the reform dialogue from a religious and national interest perspective, adding, “We are discussing matters that are beneficial for the country and the nation.”

Referring to recent political developments and unrest in the country, Taher said, “Many incidents are taking place in Bangladesh. We condemn all of them. The government must deal with these firmly, and Jamaat will support that effort. However, the most important thing now is to ensure elections that are fair, just, free, and devoid of terrorism.”

Taher further stated, “If Bangladesh wants to break free from its history of farcical elections, there is no alternative to holding genuinely fair elections. A consensus should be reached quickly without unnecessary delay, and a roadmap should be announced immediately. Unfortunately, we still do not see an environment conducive to fair elections.”

The National Consensus Commission is currently holding its first phase of dialogue with political parties based on the key recommendations of five reform commissions, aiming to build agreement on necessary national reforms.
