Ukhiya, Oct 19 (V7N) – After nearly a year in India, 32-year-old Rohingya woman Laila Begum has safely returned to her family at a refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar. On Saturday afternoon (October 18) at 4:00 p.m., police handed her over to her husband and relatives at the Balu Field Police Camp in Camp-02 West.
According to police sources, Laila Begum crossed the border into India illegally almost a year ago to seek medical treatment. After an extended stay, she was recently detained by Indian law enforcement authorities. On the morning of October 15, she was returned to Bangladesh via the Haluaghat border in Mymensingh in a pushback operation by Indian authorities.
Upon arrival in Bangladesh, Haluaghat Police took Laila Begum into their custody. Following verification and necessary checks, she was transferred under the supervision of the Mymensingh District Police and with the assistance of the 14th Armed Police Battalion (APBN) to the Rohingya camp in Ukhiya.
Additional Deputy Inspector General Md. Siraj Amin, commander of the 14 APBN, confirmed that Laila Begum had traveled to India for medical treatment and that authorities ensured her safe return to her family. “We remain fully prepared to guarantee the safety and security of refugees in the camp,” he said.
Police further reported that upon reaching Ukhiya, Laila Begum was formally handed over to her husband, Monjur Alam, in the presence of local Rohingya community leaders. She is currently residing in the camp and is in good physical health.
International organizations, including the United Nations, have emphasized increased humanitarian efforts along the border and awareness programs among camp residents to ensure the protection and well-being of vulnerable refugees.
