Rangamati, Dec 15 (V7N) – General students of Rangamati Government College on Sunday staged a protest rally and formed a human chain on campus, demanding the removal of a teacher accused of inappropriate behavior toward female students and making derogatory remarks about the hijab.
The protest was triggered by uncertainty over the judicial process against the accused teacher, Biplob Kumar Shil, and allegations that efforts are being made to protect him. Students said they do not want to see him serving as a teacher at the college under such circumstances.
According to protesters, while previously posted at Feni Government College, Biplob Kumar Shil was accused of harassing a female student and making offensive comments regarding the hijab. Following strong protests by local residents and students in Feni, no legal action was taken against him. Instead, he was reportedly transferred with a promotion to Rangamati Government College.
On Sunday morning, when the accused teacher arrived to formally join the Rangamati Government College, students began protesting in front of him on campus.
Leaders from various student organizations joined the demonstration, including Rangamati Government College Chhatra Dal President Md. Omar Morshed, Student Rights Council President Imam Hossain Imu, Hill Students’ Council President Gyan Chakma, College Chhatra Dal General Secretary Shariful Islam Shakil, and Hill Students’ Council General Secretary Bishwajit Chakma. A large number of general students also took part.
Addressing the human chain, student leaders said that a teacher who lacks moral integrity and poses a threat to the safety of female students has no place in an educational institution. They expressed deep concern and anger over the absence of visible judicial action despite serious allegations against the accused teacher.
They further stated that making derogatory remarks about the hijab is not only an attack on a student’s personal beliefs but also a violation of religious freedom and human rights. Such behavior from a teacher, they said, is completely unacceptable. The protesters demanded exemplary punishment and the permanent removal of the accused teacher from the college.
The speakers also alleged that a vested group is actively attempting to shield the accused, further polluting the academic environment. They warned that if swift and fair justice is not ensured, students will be compelled to launch more stringent programs.
After the protest rally and human chain, the students submitted a memorandum to the college principal, Professor Mohammad Nasimul Haque. They also submitted a separate memorandum to the district administration, calling for immediate administrative and legal action.
In the memorandum, the students emphasized that ensuring a safe educational environment for female students is the responsibility of the authorities, warning that any negligence in this regard would make the concerned officials accountable.
