Tragedy struck in Feni's Chhagalnaiya upazila as a Chittagong-bound train collided with a truck at a level crossing, resulting in the deaths of at least six individuals on Friday morning.
According to police reports, the absence of the gateman on duty led to the failure to lower the bar at the level crossing between Fazilpur and Muhuriganj railway stations around 8:15 am. As a result, the truck entered the railway tracks, leading to the fatal collision.
The deceased include Md Mizan, 32, from Barisal's Ujirpur upazila; Abul Khayer Miah, 40, and his son Ashiq, 14, from Comilla's Laksham upazila; as well as Dil Mohammad, 23; Rifat, 17; and Sazzad, 18, from Comilla's Chauddagram upazila.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Md Shah Alam from the Feni Railway Police Camp stated that Mizan was driving the truck, while the other victims were train passengers who were riding outside the locomotive. Five individuals died instantly, while another passed away during treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
Zakir Hasan, the superintendent of police in Feni, mentioned that three of the victims, Dil, Rifat, and Sazzad, were en route to Chittagong for Eid shopping. Their friends transported their bodies back to their village for burial before authorities arrived at the scene.
The police assured that appropriate legal actions would be taken in accordance with the law regarding the tragic incident.
