Rangamati, Oct 26 (V7N) – A three-member committee will investigate allegations that protesters in Sajek used a banner belonging to the Headman-Karbari Association without the organisation’s authorisation, raising questions about the movement’s leadership and representation.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting with headmen and karbaris at the Rangamati Deputy Commissioner’s Office on Sunday to discuss ways to resolve unrest in Sajek, under Baghaichhari upazila.
The association has denied that the banner used by the protesters belongs to its organisation. The investigation will examine how the banner came into the protesters’ possession, who used it and whether the association had authorised its use.
Khagrachhari MP Wadud Bhuiyan, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, said the Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) had been assigned to oversee the committee’s work.
The dispute has raised broader questions about who is leading the movement, whether the association officially supports it and who should represent the affected communities in negotiations.
Participants stressed the need to involve legitimate local representatives in dialogue to resolve the crisis. Uncertainty over representation, they warned, could complicate efforts to reach an agreement.
Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Nazma Ashrafi, Superintendent of Police Muhammad Abdur Rakib, representatives of military and civilian agencies, and headman-karbari leaders attended the meeting.
Local residents said the administration faced the dual challenge of maintaining law and order and bringing the concerned parties to the negotiating table.
