Dhaka, Oct 31, (V7N) – Chief Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad Md Nurul Islam Moni on Saturday stressed the need for harnessing natural resources, water resources and communication infrastructure to accelerate development in the coastal regions, including Barishal division.

He said coordinated planning and effective initiatives were essential to tap the vast development potential of the coastal areas.

The Chief Whip made the remarks while addressing the AGM-2025 and extended meeting of the Barishal Divisional Officers' Association at the LD Hall of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban as the chief guest. Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Home Affairs Zainul Abedin attended the programme.

Moni said expansion of railway and road communication networks was crucial for the development of Barishal division. He stressed the need to improve road conditions from Bhanga to Kuakata to reduce travel difficulties and the risk of accidents along the route, according to a press release from the parliament secretariat. Excessive movement of heavy vehicles and inadequate maintenance have been damaging the roads, he said, calling for effective measures to address the problems.

Highlighting the potential of the country's water resources, the Chief Whip said Bangladesh had yet to make proper use of this valuable resource. He said planned utilisation of rivers and water resources in Barishal and other coastal areas could bring significant improvements in agriculture, fisheries, communications and overall economic activities.

He also called upon the concerned ministers, lawmakers, government officials and professionals to work together, irrespective of political affiliations, to ensure the development of Barishal division. If necessary, a coordinated meeting involving relevant public representatives could be arranged in consultation with the Speaker of Parliament, he added.

Addressing government officials, Moni said they could bring positive changes to people's living standards by performing their duties with sincerity, efficiency and a strong sense of responsibility. He urged the officials to utilise their professional expertise and experience for public welfare.

Following the AGM, a 51-member new executive committee of the association was formed, with Financial Institutions Division Secretary Nazma Mobarek as president and National Board of Revenue (NBR) Commissioner Syed Atikur Rahman as general secretary. Former president of the association Lutful Azim chaired the programme. Nazma Mobarek, Power Division Secretary Mirana Mahruk, and additional secretaries, joint secretaries and other government officials from different ministries and organisations were also present.
