Rangamati, Nov 19 (V7N) – Police have arrested five local leaders of the Awami League and its student wing, the Chhatra League, in Kaukhali upazila of Rangamati on allegations of planning acts of sabotage and violence. The arrests were made during separate raids conducted across different locations in the upazila on Monday and Tuesday, according to Kaukhali Police Station.
The detainees are Konistha Barua, Cultural Affairs Secretary of Kaukhali Upazila Awami League; Abdur Rashid Khondaker, President of the Upazila unit of the Workers’ League; Md. Gias Uddin, Vice President of Betbunia Union Awami League; Md. Sohag, Deputy Secretary for Information and Research of the Upazila Chhatra League; and Md. Sagor, President of Ward No. 1 Chhatra League of Ghagra Union.
Among the five, two are residents of Kalampati Union, two are from Ghagra Union, and one is from Betbunia Union.
Kaukhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saifur Rahman Sohag stated that the suspects were preparing for potential violent activities ahead of the verdict against fugitive former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a case at the International Crimes Tribunal related to crimes against humanity. Acting on confidential intelligence, police detained them as suspected preparators.
Following initial interrogation, the detainees have been produced before the court for further legal proceedings.
