Rangamati, Oct 08 (V7N) – Three resorts in Rangamati have been fined for various irregularities, including failure to display service price lists, storing stale and rotten food, and using unauthorized counterfeit spices, during a mobile court operation on Wednesday.
The fines were imposed during an inspection at several resorts and restaurants in Rangamati Sadar under the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009.
Bargi Resort was fined Tk 2 lakh for violating Sections 39 and 52 of the law, while Rejang Resort was fined Tk 10,000 for violating Section 39.
The mobile court was led by Md Tamzid Rahman, Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate of Rangamati district administration. Rana Deb Nath, Assistant Director of the Rangamati district office of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, was also present.
Officials involved in the operation said complaints had been received that some resorts and restaurants were charging customers for services without properly displaying price lists and were failing to maintain food quality and expiry standards.
During the inspection, serious irregularities were found at Bargi Resort, including the storage of stale and rotten food and the use of unauthorized counterfeit spices.
Officials said such practices pose a serious risk to the health and safety of tourists and consumers.
Rangamati is one of Bangladesh's major tourist destinations, attracting visitors with the scenic beauty of Kaptai Lake, green hills and local cuisine. Tourists visiting various attractions around the lake often dine at local restaurants and resorts.
Tourism stakeholders said the quality of food, accommodation and services plays an important role in shaping visitors' overall experience. Irregularities at individual establishments could therefore have a negative impact on the image of Rangamati's tourism sector as a whole.
The district administration said monitoring and mobile court operations at restaurants, resorts and food establishments would continue ahead of the tourism season. Legal action will be taken against businesses found deceiving consumers, serving food in unhygienic conditions or violating food storage and safety requirements.
