Tangail, July 1 (V7N) — In a decisive crackdown on environmental hazards, local administration authorities in Tangail’s Ghatail upazila demolished two illegal lead-producing factories on Tuesday afternoon. The mobile court was led by Executive Magistrate and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Abu Sayeed, who personally supervised the operation.

The illegal factories had been operating deep within the Gajari forest of the Kamalpur Pahari area in Saghardighi Union. According to UNO Abu Sayeed, a criminal group had established makeshift facilities where they were burning used batteries to extract and sell lead — a highly toxic process posing grave risks to both the environment and public health.

“Such activities are extremely dangerous and illegal. After receiving complaints from local residents, we conducted this operation under the direct instruction of the Tangail District Commissioner,” said UNO Abu Sayeed.

During the operation, both factories were destroyed using excavators (commonly known as vaku), rendering the sites inoperable.

The eviction and demolition drive was carried out with the assistance of the Department of Environment (DoE) Tangail, including Assistant Director Sanjeeb Kumar Ghosh and Inspector Biplob Kumar Sutradhar. Also present at the scene were members of the Bangladesh Army, personnel from the Ghatail Police Station, Fire Service, and officials from the Forest Department.

UNO Abu Sayeed emphasized that the administration is committed to preserving forest areas and protecting the environment. “Operations like this will continue in the future to safeguard ecological balance and ensure public safety,” he added.

This swift and coordinated response by the administration sets a strong precedent for the enforcement of environmental regulations in remote and forested areas, where illegal operations often go unnoticed.
