Dhaka, Jul 09 (V7N)- The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across much of the country over the next 48 hours due to the influence of active monsoon conditions, warning of possible waterlogging in major cities and landslides in hilly areas.
In a heavy rainfall warning issued on Thursday, the Met Office said parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions are likely to experience intense rainfall from 6:00 a.m. on July 9 through the next 48 hours.
The department warned that the persistent rainfall could cause temporary waterlogging in parts of Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas. It also cautioned that landslides may occur in the hilly districts of Chattogram Division, where continuous rainfall has already saturated the soil.
In a separate forecast for inland river ports, valid from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, the BMD said temporary rain or thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of 45 to 60 kilometres per hour may affect the regions of Dhaka, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh, Faridpur, Madaripur, Kushtia, Jashore, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar and Sylhet.
The Meteorological Department has advised inland river ports in the affected areas to hoist Cautionary Signal No. 1.
Authorities have urged residents, particularly those living in low-lying and landslide-prone areas, to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather, and follow official advisories until conditions improve.
