Dhaka, May 12 (V7N) – After enduring several days of relentless heat and blazing sunshine, the capital Dhaka was finally greeted by refreshing rainfall on Sunday night, offering much-needed relief to residents.
The sky turned cloudy from the evening of May 11 (Sunday), and light drizzles began after 8 PM in several parts of the city, including Mirpur, Karwanbazar, Banglamotor, Mohammadpur, Badda, Gulshan, and Banani. The rain, accompanied by cool winds, continued into Monday morning, easing the intensity of the ongoing heatwave.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, hailstorms accompanied by thunder and lightning were reported in parts of Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet, and several other districts including Kishoreganj, Narsingdi, Rangamati, Comilla, Brahmanbaria, Panchagarh, Rajshahi, and Chittagong. The highest recorded rainfall was 52 millimeters in Rangamati.
The Met Office further stated that on Monday (May 12), temporary gusty winds, along with rain or thunderstorms, are likely in parts of Mymensingh, Sylhet, and isolated places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, and Chittagong divisions. Other areas are expected to experience partly cloudy skies.
Night temperatures across the country are likely to remain mostly unchanged, while daytime temperatures may fall by 1–3°C in most regions except Khulna, where it may remain steady.
Despite the rainfall, a mild to moderate heatwave continues over Rajshahi, Khulna, Dhaka, Chittagong, and Barisal divisions, as well as in districts such as Rangpur, Dinajpur, Nilphamari, Gaibandha, Mymensingh, Jamalpur, and Sherpur. However, this heatwave is expected to gradually subside in some areas over the week.
The hottest temperature recorded on Sunday was 41.8°C in Chuadanga, the highest in the country for the day.
The Meteorological Department also hinted at the possibility of isolated Kalbaisakhi storms later this week, accompanied by some lingering heatwaves in parts of the country.
