Dhaka, Dec 09 (V7N) – The Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka was blocked on Tuesday afternoon, as protesters demanded the removal and punishment of current Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam. The demonstration completely halted traffic in the area.

The road was blocked around 3 pm by the Shaheed Pintu Memorial Society, with hundreds of participants joining from Wari, Gendaria, Old Dhaka, and other parts of the city.

The protest follows allegations by Nasima Akhter Kalpana, wife of former BNP co-organizing secretary Nasir Uddin Ahmed Pintu, that her husband’s death in May 2015 was a “planned murder.” Pintu had been arrested and held in Rajshahi Central Jail at the time. On May 3, 2015, he was transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His family immediately alleged foul play, but the then State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan dismissed the claims.

The current protests were further fueled after the report of the Independent Investigation Commission of the interim government into the controversial Peelkhana massacre named IGP Baharul Alam among the police officers involved. Following this, Kalpana reiterated her demand for Baharul Alam’s immediate removal and exemplary punishment.
