Dhaka, Aug 22 (V7N) – The body of missing senior journalist and columnist Bibhuranjan Sarkar, 71, was recovered from the Meghna River in the Gazaria area of Munshiganj, a day after his disappearance. Police confirmed the recovery and stated that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of death.
According to Masud Alam, Deputy Commissioner of Ramna Division Police, the body was found floating near Char Balakia in the Kalagachia area on Friday afternoon. Locals first spotted the body and alerted river police, who retrieved it around 3:00 PM using a motorized boat. It was later sent to Munshiganj General Hospital for autopsy.
SP Alamgir Hossain of the Narayanganj River Police said the body appeared to have been in the water for about a day and showed early signs of decomposition. No visible injuries were found, and the cause of death will be confirmed following a post-mortem examination.
Kalagachia river outpost in-charge, Md. Saleh Ahmed Pathan, said a photograph of the body was sent to Ramna police, and family members identified it as that of Bibhuranjan Sarkar. Notably, his glasses were still hanging from his neck, and there were no signs of trauma on his body during the initial inquest.
Inspector (Investigation) of Ramna Police Station, Tarikul Islam, confirmed that a general diary (GD) was filed by Bibhuranjan’s son, Ritu Sarkar, on Thursday night after he failed to return home. Since the journalist left his mobile phone at home, his last known location could not be traced through technical means. Police are now analyzing CCTV footage to track his movements and are following other leads.
Bibhuranjan Sarkar reportedly left his residence on Thursday morning, telling family members he was headed to his workplace at Ajker Patrika in Banasree. However, inquiries later revealed he never arrived at the office. According to his colleagues, he had been on a seven-day leave since August 16.
His brother, Chiraranjan Sarkar, wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday night that Bibhuranjan left home around 10:00 AM for work as usual but was not seen at his office or by anyone in his personal or professional circles throughout the day. He did not return home by 1:00 AM, prompting the family to contact the police.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and death of Bibhuranjan Sarkar, a respected figure in Bangladesh’s journalistic community.
