Sylhet, Jun 27 (V7N) – Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir has expressed optimism that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's recent visit to China will pave the way for substantial Chinese investment in Bangladesh, helping reduce the country's trade deficit in the coming years.
He made the remarks on Saturday afternoon while speaking to reporters after attending the Sylhet Bar Association's newcomers' reception and workshop programme.
The commerce minister said the Prime Minister's official visit had created new opportunities to deepen economic cooperation between Bangladesh and China, particularly in the areas of trade and investment.
According to Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Bangladesh could benefit significantly if it becomes part of the proposed China-Myanmar economic corridor.
"If Bangladesh is included in the China-Myanmar corridor, goods can reach the country within 24 hours," he said, adding that improved connectivity would encourage greater Chinese investment and strengthen bilateral trade.
The minister expressed confidence that enhanced economic cooperation with China would contribute to narrowing Bangladesh's trade deficit while creating new opportunities for business and industrial growth.
Responding to a question regarding the Shahjalal Shrine Management Committee in Sylhet, Khandaker Abdul Muktadir rejected allegations of political influence in the committee's formation.
He said no appointments were made on political grounds and that the committee had been constituted through a systematic and appropriate process.
The minister reiterated the government's commitment to expanding international trade partnerships and attracting foreign investment to support Bangladesh's long-term economic development.
