Miami, Jun 26 (V7N)- Group K leaders Colombia and Portugal are set for a high-stakes showdown in the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday, with top spot in the group and a potentially easier path in the knockout stage on the line. Colombia need only a draw to finish first, while Portugal must win to overtake the South Americans.
The match, scheduled to kick off at 5:30 a.m. Bangladesh time at Miami Stadium, will also serve as an important test for both teams ahead of the Round of 32.
Colombia head coach Néstor Lorenzo praised Portuguese captain Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the contest, describing him as one of the greatest players in football history.
"Ronaldo is an extraordinary player. One of the best in history. You cannot give him space inside the penalty area," Lorenzo said.
Meanwhile, Portugal coach Roberto Martínez is reportedly preparing special tactics to contain Colombia's attacking threats, particularly winger Luis Díaz. Portuguese media reports suggest Martínez is considering assigning two defenders to closely mark the Liverpool star, while also keeping a close watch on defender Daniel Muñoz and veteran playmaker James Rodríguez.
Martínez also dismissed suggestions that Ronaldo could be rested despite Portugal's qualification hopes.
"He has played many matches for his club and country, but he is fresh. We will assess everything and use him if necessary," the Portugal coach said.
Although Colombia have already secured a place in the knockout stage after winning their opening two matches, Lorenzo indicated that he has no plans to rest his key players against one of the tournament favorites.
"We are going to face a very big team. They are capable of winning the World Cup. We must be ready for every challenge and use different weapons to succeed," he said.
Colombia's defense has been one of the strongest in the tournament so far, while midfielder Juan Fernando Quintero is expected to push for a place in the starting lineup after making a positive impact as a substitute in the previous match.
Portugal could also make changes to their starting XI, with Bernardo Silva likely to return to strengthen the midfield, while Rafael Leão may also start to add pace and physical presence in attack.
The outcome of the match will determine the Group K winners. A draw would see Colombia finish top of the standings, while Portugal must claim all three points to secure first place.
