Dhaka, Nov 07 (V7N) — The dominance of syndicates in the onion market has driven prices sharply upward over the past two weeks, causing hardship for buyers. Meanwhile, the price of local lentils has also surged.
Retailers report that the price of onions has increased by 30 to 40 taka per kg in just 4–5 days, despite sufficient supply and stock in the market. A week ago, onions were available for 75–80 taka per kg, while now the price has jumped to 110–120 taka per kg, sparking frustration among ordinary buyers.
Market insiders allege that the abnormal price hike is due to syndication at the wholesale level, rather than a shortage of supply.
In contrast, the vegetable market has seen some relief, with prices stabilizing or even declining for several items. Winter vegetables are becoming more available, though round brinjal, tomatoes, and carrots remain above 100 taka per kg. Most other vegetables are priced at 60–80 taka per kg. Traders expect that the increasing supply of winter vegetables over the next two weeks will help stabilize prices further.
At the same time, local lentil prices have surged by 20–25 taka per kg in a week, reaching 150–160 taka per kg.
Experts warn that while vegetable supply is improving, onion and lentil prices remain volatile due to market syndication and speculative trading.
