Dhaka, Jul 15 (V7N)- Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that bringing changes to Dhaka overnight is not possible through the efforts of a mayor or city administrator alone. He emphasized the need for coordinated decisions involving all relevant institutions, including Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA), the Power Division and Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK).
He made the remarks at a seminar titled "Waste Management in the City" held at the conference room of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Wednesday (July 15) morning.
The minister said road damage and potholes increase in the capital during the monsoon season. One of the reasons behind this, he said, is that funds for various development projects are often released during the rainy season.
Mirza Fakhrul said the city's waste management problems cannot be solved unless city corporations are given stronger institutional capacity and transformed into more effective governing bodies.
He stressed the importance of creating a sense of responsibility among citizens to keep roads, neighborhoods and the environment clean. According to him, improving waste management is not possible without public awareness and cooperation.
The minister also highlighted concerns over weak medical waste management systems and mentioned government initiatives to protect the Buriganga and Turag rivers.
Meanwhile, RAJUK Chairman Md. Riazul Islam said that stronger and more coordinated initiatives are required for the overall development and waste management of the capital.
