SM Mannan, the newly elected president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), has expressed deep appreciation to garment factory owners for ensuring the full and timely disbursement of workers' salaries and bonuses ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations.
In a press release, Mannan acknowledged the commendable efforts of the factory owners, which have enabled garment workers to partake in the upcoming Eid festivities with their families.
Mannan extended his gratitude to various stakeholders, including the government, law enforcement agencies, labour leaders, and the media, for their crucial roles in facilitating this smooth financial transition.
Specifically, Mannan highlighted the BGMEA's oversight of 450 factories identified as at risk of delayed payments. Direct intervention in 26 critical cases by the BGMEA was instrumental in achieving this significant accomplishment.
Mannan proudly announced that, thanks to these collective efforts, all factories have fulfilled their obligations of paying March salaries and Eid bonuses. A few remaining factories are finalizing their disbursements, expected to be completed by the end of the day.
Furthermore, Mannan emphasized the vital role of the financial sector, thanking the Bangladesh Bank and various scheduled banks for operating on government holidays in areas with dense garment factory populations. This exceptional measure played a pivotal role in ensuring workers received timely and complete payments.
Looking ahead to the Eid holiday season, Mannan urged the government to prioritize safety measures, specifically calling for actions to prevent overcrowding and ensure safety on buses, trains, and boats during this festive period.
