Dhaka, Jun 09 (V7N) – Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon has dismissed reports claiming that Bengali, History and Philosophy subjects are being removed from the Honours (Graduate Honours) level, describing the information as “baseless.”
Speaking to reporters after the ECNEC meeting at the Secretariat on Tuesday, the minister clarified that no decision has been taken to discontinue any academic subject at the undergraduate level.
Responding to questions from journalists, Milon said the government is instead reviewing opportunities to introduce new subjects in Honours programs based on emerging academic and employment demands.
“No decision has been made to drop any subject,” the Education Minister said, adding that discussions are focused on expanding educational opportunities rather than reducing them.
The minister also noted that the ECNEC meeting discussed projects aimed at modernizing and strengthening the madrasa education system.
The clarification comes amid widespread discussions on social media following reports that Bengali, History and Philosophy departments would be removed from Honours programs. The speculation emerged after the Education Ministry announced plans to reform the national curriculum and introduce several new subjects for the 2027 academic year.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister’s Information Adviser Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman also addressed the issue during a briefing at the Secretariat. He said Bengali, History and Philosophy departments would continue to exist at the Honours level, although discussions are ongoing regarding their availability across all institutions.
Dr. Rahman emphasized that no formal decision has yet been finalized on the matter.
The government’s latest statements are expected to ease concerns among students, educators and academic stakeholders regarding the future of the humanities disciplines in higher education.
