BARGUNA, Aug 17 (V7N) — A 15-year-old Class 10 student went missing after entering the strong-current Payra River for a swim in the Latakata area of Barguna Sadar upazila on Sunday morning.

The missing student, identified as Jui, is a Class 10 student at Mirpur-1 Government High School in Dhaka. She lived with her family in Mirpur-1. Her father, Zahir Uddin Chowdhury, is a businessman.

According to local residents and family members, Jui travelled with her mother to visit the home of Shanu Mia in Bain Sametar village of Barguna Sadar upazila. She later went to the Payra River for a swim with a female friend.

At the time, the river was experiencing ebb tide. At one point, Jui was swept away by the strong current and went missing.

Her friend informed local residents, who immediately began searching the river. After failing to locate her, they informed the Barguna Fire Service.

Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene and conducted a search operation but could not find the missing student. A diving team from the Patuakhali Fire Service was later called in to assist with the rescue operation.

The search has been hampered by the rising tide and adverse weather conditions.

Barguna Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Hachnain Parvez said the officer in charge of Babuganj Police Outpost reached the scene shortly after the incident.

“Police are assisting the ongoing search operation to locate the missing student,” he said.
