United Nations, Jun 02 (V7N) — Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman has been elected President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), marking a significant diplomatic achievement for the country.
In the election held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Tuesday, Dr. Khalilur Rahman secured victory over Cyprus' candidate, Andreas S. Kakouris.
Voting began at 10:00 a.m. local time, with 190 UN member states participating in the ballot. Dr. Khalilur Rahman received 99 votes, while Andreas S. Kakouris secured 91 votes.
As President-elect, Dr. Khalilur Rahman will preside over the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, which is scheduled to commence on September 8. In this role, he will oversee the proceedings of the Assembly and guide discussions on key international issues throughout the session.
The election marks the second time that Bangladesh has assumed the presidency of the UN General Assembly.
Previously, Humayun Rashid Chowdhury, a former Bangladeshi foreign secretary and politician, served as President of the 41st session of the General Assembly in 1986.
The victory is being viewed as an important milestone for Bangladesh's diplomacy and its growing role in international affairs.
