DHAKA, May 3 (V7N) — A Dhaka court today granted a three-day remand for Sudip Chakroborthy, an associate professor at Dhaka University’s Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, in connection with the suicide of his student, Munira Mahjabin Mimo.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Manjurul Islam passed the order after investigating officers produced the accused in court, seeking time for detailed interrogation to uncover the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
The case follows the death of Munira Mahjabin Mimo, whose body was discovered on the morning of April 26 in her rented apartment in the city's North Badda area. Police arrested Sudip Chakroborthy later that same day from North Badda. Following an initial court appearance on April 27, he had been held in jail until today’s remand hearing.
The victim’s father filed a case alleging that the teacher instigated Mimo to take her own life. According to police and case documents, several key pieces of evidence have surfaced:
Recovered Note: A handwritten note was found at the scene, which is currently being analyzed by forensic experts.
Digital Communication: WhatsApp messages retrieved from the victim's phone reportedly suggest an intimate relationship between the student and the associate professor.
Autopsy: The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) to confirm the cause of death; the full report is pending.
The incident has sparked significant concern within the Dhaka University community. While the legal process is underway, students and faculty members have called for a transparent investigation to ensure justice for Mimo.
Police stated that the three-day remand will be used to verify the authenticity of the digital evidence and further investigate the nature of the relationship and the events immediately preceding the student's death.
