DHAKA, APR 30 (V7N) — Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has reaffirmed the government's steadfast commitment to maintaining communal harmony and ensuring the safety of all citizens, regardless of their religious beliefs. In a message released on the eve of Buddha Purnima, the largest religious festival of the Buddhist community, the Premier extended his warmest greetings to Buddhists in Bangladesh and across the world.

The festival, which commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Gautama Buddha, is being observed today with traditional religious fervor and enthusiasm across the country.

In a powerful statement on civil rights, the Prime Minister noted that while religious practice is an individual matter, the right to a secure life is a collective guarantee. “Religion belongs to individuals, but the right to security belongs to everyone,” he asserted, highlighting his administration’s role as the protector of all communities.

The Premier described Bangladesh as a “bright example of communal harmony,” where people of different faiths have coexisted for centuries through mutual respect. He emphasized that the government is dedicated to upholding the constitutional rights and religious freedom of every citizen.

Constitutional Rights: Ensuring equal rights and overall welfare for all citizens remains a core priority of the democratic government.

Protection of Minorities: The Prime Minister highlighted that specific initiatives have been launched to protect religious minorities and their places of worship, promising that these efforts will be sustained.

Global Context: In the face of rising global intolerance and conflict, he stressed that the Buddhist principles of peace, compassion, and non-violence are more relevant today than ever for maintaining social stability.

A Secure Home: The Premier reiterated his vision of a Bangladesh that serves as a "secure home" for people of all faiths and opinions, where diversity is viewed as a national strength rather than a point of division.

Buddha Purnima is being celebrated with various programs, including the lighting of lamps, peace processions (Prabhat Pheri), and special prayers for national peace and prosperity at monasteries including the Dharmarajika Buddhist Monastery in Dhaka and the Golden Temple in Bandarban.

The Prime Minister concluded his message by wishing for the festival to bring peace, happiness, and prosperity to all, fostering a spirit of tolerance and brotherhood across the nation.
