DHAKA, May 1 (V7N) — Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today declared that upholding the social dignity, safety, and fair rights of workers is the "foremost priority" of his democratic government. In a message released ahead of the Great May Day and National Occupational Health and Safety Day 2026, to be observed tomorrow, the Premier extended his greetings to Bangladeshi workers at home and abroad.

This year, the day is being observed under the theme: ‘Healthy Workers, Productive Hands, A New Dawn Awaits’ (Sustho Sramik, Karmotho Hat, Ashbe Ebar Nobo Provat).

The Prime Minister paid tribute to the martyrs of the 1886 Haymarket Riot in Chicago, noting that the tireless efforts of workers are the bedrock of Bangladesh’s industry, agriculture, and infrastructure.

"The two hands of workers are the key to the prosperity and development of the state and society," the Prime Minister stated, echoing the philosophy of his father, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. He highlighted the late President's role in pioneering the garment sector and opening overseas labor markets, which remain the pillars of the national economy today.

Reflecting on the government’s recent performance and future plans, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman outlined several key initiatives:

  • Financial Security: The Premier noted that the government ensured the timely payment of wages and bonuses for all workers during the recent Eid-ul-Fitr.

  • Probashi Card: A new initiative to introduce a ‘Probashi Card’ is underway, aimed at ensuring economic security and providing various benefits for expatriate workers.

  • Wage Reform: The government is committed to regular wage reviews and ensuring equal pay for men and women.

  • Global Compliance: Bangladesh remains a committed partner of the International Labour Organization (ILO), having ratified 39 conventions and one protocol.

  • Safety Standards: Enhancing occupational health and safety protocols to ensure that every workplace is a secure environment for the labor force.

The Prime Minister emphasized that positive changes in the lives of the working class are essential for building a "prosperous, self-reliant, and humane Bangladesh." He credited past BNP administrations for establishing the Workers’ Welfare Foundation and implementing minimum wages for garment workers, pledging that such welfare-oriented policies would continue with renewed vigor.

"Through collective efforts and mutual cooperation, we will be able to build the desired Bangladesh, Insha Allah," the Premier concluded, wishing success for all programs scheduled for May Day.
