Dhaka, April 24 (V7N): A new report by the International Crisis Group says the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led government is facing high public expectations and complex challenges after coming to power through what it describes as the country’s first relatively free and fair election in nearly two decades.
The report, published on Thursday, notes that the February election marked a significant step forward in restoring democratic processes, with strong voter turnout and a largely peaceful environment. It also highlights the smooth transfer of power following nearly 18 months of an interim administration. However, it points out that the absence of the Bangladesh Awami League from the election limited political competition and raised questions about long-term inclusiveness.
According to the report, the most urgent priority for the new government is economic recovery. Bangladesh is currently grappling with high inflation, sluggish investment, and pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Global factors, including instability in the Middle East, rising fuel prices, and disruptions in trade, are likely to intensify economic stress, increasing the cost of living and placing further strain on industry and commerce.
The report also emphasizes the need to strengthen governance by tackling corruption, improving law and order, and reforming administrative institutions. It calls for professionalization of the police force and measures to restore public confidence in the judiciary.
Politically, the implementation of the so-called “July Charter” reform package is seen as a major test for the government. The report suggests that authorities should pursue dialogue and consensus with opposition groups to avoid confrontation. It also underscores the importance of making realistic decisions about the future political role of the Awami League, noting that excluding the party from the political landscape over the long term may prove difficult.
On foreign policy, maintaining a strategic balance is considered crucial. The report highlights the importance of strengthening ties with India, China, and the United States, with particular emphasis on rebuilding relations with India.
The report concludes with a warning that if the government fails to deliver visible progress in reforms and economic recovery within a limited post-election window, public dissatisfaction could grow, potentially leading to renewed political instability in the country.
