DHAKA, April 9 (V7N) – Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives Milton Dick today paid a courtesy call on Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, at his office in parliament.  

Dick led a 13-member delegation that included Deputy Speaker Sharon Claydon MP, Labour Party member Basem Abdo, Senator Deborah O’Neill, Liberal Party Senator Andrew McLachlan, Independent Senator Tammy Tyrrell, and Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Susan Ryle.  

During the meeting, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad recalled Australia’s support during Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War and emphasized that stronger parliamentary relations would enhance government-to-government ties and deepen people-to-people connections. He noted that the current government has ushered in a new chapter in parliamentary democracy, with active opposition participation strengthening the vibrancy of parliament.  

Milton Dick reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to supporting parliamentary democracy. Both sides stressed the importance of strengthening ties between the two parliaments, expanding collaboration in education, and promoting women’s empowerment in democratic processes.  

Later, at the invitation of Speaker Ahmad, the Australian delegation observed the ongoing session of Bangladesh’s national parliament. Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal MP, lawmakers Tahsina Rushdi MP and M Nasser Rahman MP, along with senior officials from the Parliament Secretariat and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also joined the discussions.
