Dhaka, Apr 08 (V7N) – The Anti-Terrorism Act (Amendment) Ordinance Bill-2026 has been passed in the National Parliament, introducing stricter provisions to curb terrorism and enabling the government to ban individuals, organizations, and political parties over alleged involvement in terrorist activities.
The bill was placed in Parliament by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and was passed on Wednesday through a unanimous voice vote. Under the new law, the government now holds expanded authority to prohibit any entity, including political parties, accused of links to terrorism.
A key provision of the amendment also bans the promotion or support of such entities across online platforms and social media. Additionally, stricter penalties have been introduced for individuals providing financial assistance, shelter, or any form of support to banned organizations.
The parliamentary session began at 11:00 am under the chairmanship of Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed during the first session of the 13th National Parliament.
It is noteworthy that the interim government had earlier promulgated the ordinance on May 11 last year, when Parliament was not in session. The President issued the ordinance under Article 93(1) of the Constitution to facilitate immediate amendments to the Anti-Terrorism Act. The ordinance was later published in the official gazette and has now been formally approved by Parliament.
The passage of this bill marks a significant shift in the country’s legal framework concerning national security and counter-terrorism measures.
