DHAKA, Feb 25, (V7N) - Bangladesh today observed National Martyred Army Day, paying solemn tribute to the martyrs of the 2009 Pilkhana massacre.

On the eve of the day, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued a message praying for the eternal peace of the martyrs and expressing deep sympathy with their bereaved families. He recalled that on February 25, 2009, a brutal carnage at the then BDR headquarters in Pilkhana claimed 74 lives, including 57 army officers.

The premier noted that the day had not been observed with due importance after 2009, but since 2024, following the country’s liberation from fascism, it has been commemorated as Martyred Army Day. He emphasized that the trial of the killings remains ongoing and, as the matter is sub judice, detailed comments are not possible. However, he stressed that the massacre was linked to activities against the country’s independence and sovereignty.

Rahman said attempts were made after the incident to mislead the public with falsehoods and misinformation, but in a fascism-free Bangladesh, the underlying causes are now understood. He described the armed forces as a symbol of honor, bravery, and national pride.

“Today, we must renew our pledge so that no one can ever again conspire against the armed forces. Let this be our commitment on Martyred Army Day—that we will stand united against any conspiracy that goes against the interests of the country and its people,” the Prime Minister said.
