Dhaka, Feb 19 (V7N) — Prices of daily necessities have surged across markets in Bangladesh on the first day of the holy month of Ramadan, putting pressure on consumers and prompting calls for stricter market monitoring.

Market visits on Thursday morning showed that compared to last week, most essential items are now selling at noticeably higher prices amid increased demand.

Sharp Rise in Key Items

The price of lemons has more than doubled within two weeks. A hali (four pieces) that sold for around Tk 40 a week ago is now being sold between Tk 120 and Tk 140, depending on the market.

Local onions are selling at Tk 52–70 per kilogram, while vegetables such as brinjal, green chillies and cucumbers have also crossed the Tk 100 mark in several markets.

Chickpeas, a staple item during Ramadan, are being sold at Tk 70–90 per kilogram depending on quality. Dates — essential for Iftar — are priced at Tk 300 or more per kilogram, while broiler chicken is selling between Tk 190 and Tk 200 per kilogram. Beef prices have also shown an upward trend.

Traders Cite Demand, Buyers Express Frustration

Vendors say the price hike is largely driven by higher demand during Ramadan and a temporary supply shortage.

However, consumers voiced frustration over the sudden increase, alleging that some traders are taking advantage of the seasonal demand. Many buyers called on authorities to strengthen market monitoring to keep prices stable throughout the fasting month.
