GOPALGANJ, July 16, (V7N) – The interim government has condemned the violent attack on the convoy of National Citizens Party (NCP) leaders returning from their rally in Gopalganj, calling it a violation of fundamental rights and promising swift justice.
In an official statement issued Wednesday (July 16), the government expressed deep concern over the brutal assault targeting NCP leaders, activists, police personnel, and media representatives. The statement alleged that banned Awami League and Chhatra League activists were responsible for the violence, which included attacks on individuals and vandalism of vehicles.
The government praised the prompt response of the army and police, as well as the resilience and bravery of the rally participants who continued despite threats and violent intimidation.
The statement underscored that:
“Violence has no place in Bangladesh. Those involved in this violence will be identified and brought to justice. Justice will definitely prevail.”
The situation in Gopalganj remains tense as the Municipal Park area was transformed into a battleground following the attacks. Authorities have imposed Section 144 and deployed four platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) along with police and army units to restore order.
Meanwhile, NCP convener Nahid Islam and other party leaders have taken shelter at the Gopalganj Superintendent of Police office amid ongoing clashes.
Security forces continue efforts to control the unrest as attacks persist in waves throughout the district.
The interim government’s firm stance emphasizes the protection of citizens’ right to peaceful assembly, especially on the anniversary of the mass uprising, and sends a strong message against political violence.
