Sanaa, Nov 08 (V7N)- At least 33 people were killed and 39 others injured in airstrikes reportedly carried out by Saudi Arabia on a village near Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, on Saturday (November 7), according to the Houthi-controlled Saba news agency.

The attack on Bani Hushaish, a Houthi stronghold east of Sanaa, was described as one of the deadliest since fighting between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthi rebels resumed in July.

The Houthi-run Health Ministry said the strikes targeted several residential houses, with women and children accounting for most of the casualties.

Abdul-Aziz al-Dailami, director of Sehatuna Hospital in Sanaa, said many people, including first responders, remained trapped beneath the rubble. He alleged that further airstrikes hit as rescue teams arrived, killing several medical responders.

Al-Dailami said the injured brought to the hospital were in critical condition, suffering serious wounds to their heads, chests and legs, as well as multiple fractures.

The casualty figures could not be independently verified by Reuters. Saudi Arabia’s Center for International Communication said it was investigating the reports.

The renewed fighting between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis has effectively shattered a United Nations-brokered truce agreed in 2022, which had largely halted attacks between the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthi movement.

Since the fighting resumed, the Houthis have launched missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi airports and oil facilities. Riyadh, in turn, has carried out airstrikes in Yemen in support of its allies.

The escalation has also been linked to the wider conflict involving the United States and Iran, further complicating Yemen’s long-running war, which has lasted nearly 12 years and created one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported in October that more than 200,000 people had been displaced in Yemen since the latest escalation began.

The latest attack has raised further concerns about civilian casualties and the worsening humanitarian situation in the conflict-stricken country.
