Washington, Oct 17 (V7N)- US President Donald Trump has temporarily suspended the implementation of proposed new sanctions and additional tariffs targeting Russia, citing the need to protect US national interests and maintain domestic economic stability.
Trump announced the decision by signing an executive order on Friday, October 16, according to the information provided.
In September, Trump signed a bipartisan bill aimed at increasing trade and financial pressure on Russia and Iran. The legislation was scheduled to take effect on October 18 and was titled the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, according to the supplied account.
The bill, named in honour of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, grants the president broad powers to impose additional economic measures against countries maintaining trade ties with Russia and Iran.
One of its key provisions authorises additional tariffs of up to 100 per cent on major buyers of Russian oil and natural gas. The measure is intended to discourage countries such as China, India and Turkey from continuing to purchase Russian energy.
The legislation also includes potential sanctions targeting senior Russian government officials, the banking and energy sectors, and the so-called shadow fleet of vessels allegedly used to transport Russian energy while evading existing restrictions.
The suspension could delay the implementation of the proposed measures as the US administration weighs its national and economic interests.
