Washington, Jun 06 (V7N) – The United States has claimed that its forces destroyed at least four Iranian drones after carrying out strikes on two surveillance radar sites in southern Iran, according to a statement issued by the United States Central Command (CENTCOM).
According to media reports, CENTCOM said the operation targeted radar installations on Qeshm Island and the Goruq coastal area. The US military alleged that Iran had launched the drones toward US Navy vessels operating in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The command stated that the drones were neutralized in what it described as an act of self-defense aimed at protecting American military assets in the region.
Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that US forces also attacked the port city of Sirik in Hormozgan Province, where multiple explosions were reportedly heard following the strikes.
Iran, however, rejected the US account of the incident. Iranian authorities said the shots fired by their forces were intended only as a warning to US military units operating in the Gulf of Oman and were not part of any offensive action.
The incident marks another escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran in the waters surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route through which a significant portion of the world's oil supply passes.
Neither side has reported casualties, and independent verification of the competing claims has not yet been made. The latest confrontation is likely to heighten concerns about regional security and the potential for further military incidents in the Gulf region.
