Aug 02,  (V7N) —BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has been given full authority to finalise the party's candidate for the forthcoming presidential election.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the BNP's National Standing Committee at the party Chairman's Gulshan office on Saturday evening.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the Standing Committee has empowered Tarique Rahman to take all decisions related to the presidential candidate and the election procedure.

"On behalf of the party, we have entrusted all responsibilities relating to the selection of the presidential candidate and the election to our Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman," Fakhrul said.

He said the meeting also reviewed the government's development activities, preparations for the upcoming local government elections and organisational affairs.

The meeting began at 8pm with Tarique Rahman in the chair.

In attendance were Fakhrul and Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury,
