Kyiv, Aug. 01 (V7N) – At least three people were killed and 15 others injured after Russia launched a missile strike on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, early Saturday, according to city authorities.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the casualties, while Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera cited Reuters in reporting the attack.
Witnesses told Reuters that more than a dozen explosions rocked the city shortly after the strike began, shaking several neighborhoods.
Mayor Klitschko said residents were trapped inside damaged buildings in the Shevchenkivskyi and Solomianskyi districts following the attack.
All 15 injured victims, including two teenagers aged 13 and 17, were taken to hospital for treatment. Officials said one of the injured remains in critical condition.
The missile strike also caused fires and extensive damage in several other parts of Kyiv. Authorities reported a warehouse fire in the Darnytskyi district and the collapse of a building in the Holosiivskyi district.
Emergency services and firefighters continued rescue and recovery operations at multiple locations throughout the day.
In recent months, Russia has intensified missile attacks on Kyiv, while Ukraine has repeatedly called on its allies to strengthen the country's air defence capabilities.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged international partners to provide additional military assistance and has been in discussions with the United States regarding a licence to produce Patriot interceptor missiles domestically.
