Guwahati, Aug. 1 (V7N) – The death toll from the devastating floods in India's northeastern state of Assam has risen to 82, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
In a statement issued late Friday (July 31), the disaster management department said the overall flood situation has continued to improve, allowing relief and rehabilitation efforts to expand across the affected areas.
Authorities said the state government is operating relief camps and relief distribution centres while continuing rehabilitation support for flood-affected families.
Official figures show that more than 1.1 million people across Assam have been affected by the flooding.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the government would conduct a comprehensive assessment of the damage caused by the floods.
He added that discussions would also be held with insurance companies to explore ways of reducing financial losses and supporting people affected by the disaster during the recovery process.
Floods and landslides are a recurring threat in Assam during the annual monsoon season, often causing widespread damage to homes, infrastructure and agricultural land across the state.
