Guadalajara, Jun 24 (V7N) – Colombia secured qualification for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in a Group K encounter at Guadalajara, Mexico, on Wednesday.

Defender Daniel Muñoz scored the decisive goal as the South American side dominated large portions of the match and earned a crucial three points to book their place in the next round.

Colombia began the match on the front foot and nearly opened the scoring within the first minute. Muñoz found himself in a promising position inside the penalty area, but his close-range effort drifted wide of the target.

The Colombian attack continued to create opportunities throughout the contest. Luis Díaz and Jhon Arias both came close to breaking the deadlock but were unable to convert their chances as DR Congo's defense held firm.

After sustained pressure, Colombia finally found the breakthrough in the 76th minute. Juan Quintero delivered a precise pass into the penalty area, allowing Daniel Muñoz to enter the box and fire a low shot beyond the goalkeeper to score the only goal of the match.

Colombia thought they had added to their lead later in the game, but several goals were ruled out for offside, keeping the contest alive until the final whistle.

Despite the defeat, DR Congo produced a spirited performance. Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi was one of the standout performers, making a series of impressive saves to deny Colombia on multiple occasions. The African side's disciplined defensive display also prevented the South Americans from extending their advantage.

The victory guarantees Colombia a place in the knockout phase of the tournament. They will now face Portugal in their final Group K match, with top spot in the group still up for grabs.

DR Congo, meanwhile, remain in contention for qualification. A victory against Uzbekistan in their final group-stage fixture could still secure their passage to the next round, depending on other results.
