New York, Sep 25 (V7N)- The Makkah Defence Alliance of Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan has agreed to arrange an urgent meeting of the three countries’ military chiefs following recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.
The development was discussed by the foreign ministers of the three member states on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan attended the meeting.
According to Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry, the three sides condemned the recent Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia and discussed arrangements for an urgent meeting of the chiefs of staff under the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement.
The ministers also reviewed progress in establishing the alliance’s general secretariat, committees and working groups, as well as preparations for their activities.
The Makkah Joint Defence Agreement was signed by Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan on August 7. Under the agreement, an armed attack against one member is to be regarded as an attack against all three.
The alliance has come under greater attention following repeated attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement on Saudi territory and infrastructure. Pakistan and Türkiye have reaffirmed their support for Saudi Arabia’s security, while Pakistan has previously said that no military response under the pact was being discussed at that stage.
The latest meeting is expected to provide a forum for the three countries’ military leadership to discuss regional security developments and the implementation of the defence agreement.
