Rangamati, Sept 20 (V7N) — Rangamati city is coming under increased surveillance as district police have launched an initiative to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at key locations to help improve public safety, monitor traffic and detect criminal activity.
As part of the first phase of the initiative, eight CCTV cameras were installed on Friday in Banarupa, one of the city's busiest commercial areas.
The police will not only install the cameras but also monitor their footage around the clock through a dedicated team. A mobile police team will be ready to respond quickly if the cameras capture any unusual situation, suspected criminal activity or traffic-related incident.
Rangamati Superintendent of Police Muhammad Abdur Rakib, PPM, told V7N correspondent Alamgir Manik that Rangamati is one of Bangladesh's major tourist destinations, attracting visitors from different parts of the country throughout the year.
He said the initiative aims to strengthen the safety of tourists and residents while helping prevent road accidents and control social crimes.
“Initially, we have installed eight CCTV cameras in Banarupa, one of the city's main commercial areas. Gradually, we will install cameras at other important points across the city,” he said.
He added that footage from the cameras would be monitored continuously and that police would use the information to take prompt action if any irregularity or criminal activity was detected.
The introduction of CCTV surveillance is expected to provide additional security monitoring in busy commercial areas such as Banarupa, where large numbers of pedestrians and vehicles move throughout the day.
Footage from the cameras could also assist police investigations by providing information about the time and location of an incident and the movements of people involved, reducing reliance solely on eyewitness accounts or verbal information.
Local business owners and residents welcomed the initiative, saying Banarupa is one of the busiest parts of Rangamati, with heavy pedestrian and vehicular movement for much of the day. They said technology-based surveillance, alongside regular police presence, could strengthen security in the area.
Residents also expressed hope that the CCTV network would eventually be expanded beyond Banarupa to cover major intersections, markets, boat terminals, tourist attractions, entry points and other busy roads.
Rangamati is a popular tourist destination known for its hills, lake and natural scenery. Visitors travel to the district throughout the year, making road safety, orderly traffic management and public security important considerations for the local tourism sector.
The police initiative marks an increased use of technology in security management in Rangamati city. Its effectiveness will depend in part on how quickly and effectively police respond to incidents or irregularities detected through the surveillance system.
