Nantes, Jun 05 (V7N)- Ivory Coast sent a strong warning to World Cup contenders France with a stunning 2-1 comeback victory in an international friendly in Nantes on Thursday.
The African powerhouse secured their first-ever win over France, with Strasbourg defender Guéla Doué emerging as the hero of a memorable night for the Elephants.
France dominated the opening stages and took the lead just before halftime through a superb strike from Manchester City midfielder Ryan Cherki. The goal capped a promising first-half performance by Didier Deschamps' side, who looked in control heading into the break.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically after halftime as Ivory Coast capitalized on a series of defensive lapses by the French.
In the 53rd minute, Guéla Doué leveled the score after converting a pass from Nicolas Pépé, beating French goalkeeper Mike Maignan. The goal carried added significance as Doué's younger brother, Désiré Doué, represents France at international level and plays for Paris Saint-Germain.
Ivory Coast continued to press forward and completed the turnaround when Amad Diallo calmly finished from close range after a brilliant cross from Guéla Doué. The goal sealed a historic victory and highlighted the growing confidence of the reigning African champions.
The defeat ended France's nine-match unbeaten run and exposed defensive vulnerabilities ahead of the World Cup. Coach Didier Deschamps made numerous changes during the second half as his side struggled to cope with the pace and intensity of the Ivorians.
France captain Kylian Mbappé created several opportunities in the first half but was substituted at halftime. One bright spot for the hosts was the performance of Ryan Cherki, whose impressive display further strengthened his case for a starting role in France's opening World Cup match against Senegal on June 16.
The victory provides a significant confidence boost for Ivory Coast ahead of the tournament in the United States. The Elephants will begin their World Cup campaign against Ecuador on June 15, while France will conclude their preparations with a final warm-up match against Northern Ireland in Lille on June 8.
