MONGLA, May 27, (V7N)– The clean-up of the government-owned Thakurani Canal has officially begun to ease waterlogging in Mongla Port Municipality ahead of the monsoon season.

State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Lion Dr. Sheikh Faridul Islam inaugurated the campaign by personally removing garbage from the cemetery road area of the municipality on Wednesday morning. Cleaning work is being carried out at 11 identified spots along the canal.

He was joined by Upazila Executive Officer and Municipal Administrator Sharmin Akter Sumi, Municipal BNP President and former Mayor Md. Zulfikar Ali, General Secretary Mahbubur Rahman Manik, Upazila BNP President A. Mannan Howlader, General Secretary Abu Hossain Poni, and other local leaders.

Dr. Sheikh Faridul Islam said: “As per the election promise, activities have been started to bring back the life of the Thakurani Canal, the lifeblood of Mongla Municipality. Dirt is being removed now, and soon the canal will be revived through excavation and demolition of illegal structures on both banks. Our canal must be rescued.”

He added that not only Thakurani but all abandoned and dying canals in and outside the city will be restored, underscoring the government’s commitment to urban waterway revival and environmental management.

This initiative is expected to reduce mosquito infestation, improve drainage, and restore biodiversity in Mongla’s waterways, while also fulfilling electoral pledges to strengthen local infrastructure.
