Rajshahi, Oct 6 (V7N) – Once celebrated as the “Green City,” Rajshahi is now facing a severe environmental crisis. Nearly 2,323 trees are scheduled to be cut under three major development projects, sparking concern among environmentalists and local residents. Tree felling has already begun under one project, affecting 418 trees, and more are expected to be cut soon.

Rajshahi Medical University plans to cut 1,853 trees for its new campus, constituting the bulk of the planned deforestation. Meanwhile, Rajshahi WASA is removing 418 trees along roadways for a new pipeline installation. The Public Works Department’s Circuit House expansion project involves cutting 52 trees, which were auctioned for Tk 1.53 lakh, drawing strong criticism from environmentalists. The expansion includes a six-story building, a four-story barrack, and a single-story kitchen.

Rajshahi WASA is also implementing a Tk 4,062 crore water treatment project. As part of this initiative, a 26-kilometer pipeline will bring water from the Padma River into the city, resulting in the removal of at least 306 trees—including species such as Karoi, Mahogany, and Akashmoni—along major highways from Kashiadanga to New Kosba. In Godagari’s Rajabari area, 112 trees were cut before auction and sold together, generating Tk 14.64 lakh. At least 84 trees are still being felled.

Research shows that over the past three decades, Rajshahi’s green coverage has decreased by 26%, and surface temperatures have risen by approximately 3°C. Experts warn that continued deforestation will further heat the city and disrupt its environmental balance.

Environmental organizations have already protested on the streets, pursuing legal action and urging authorities to reconsider. They emphasize that true development goes beyond buildings and infrastructure; it must ensure sustainable living. Preserving Rajshahi’s greenery is crucial for its residents, heritage, and future.

The question now circulating across the city is whether the ongoing development spree will ultimately destroy Rajshahi’s green legacy.
