Mongla, Oct 6 (V7N) – Local BNP leaders and Swechasebak Dal have successfully cleared water hyacinth from a freshwater pond in North Chandpai village of Mongla, restoring its usability for drinking, ablution, and general community needs. The pond, which becomes a primary water source for nearby households and shops after the rainy season, had become clogged with rotting water hyacinth, rendering the water foul-smelling and unsuitable for use.
Aziz Morol, a local BNP leader, said the pond is located near Madani Jame Mosque in North Chandpai Union and serves as a key resource for both the local residents and worshippers performing ablution. Recently, the overgrowth of water hyacinth led to severe water pollution. Responding to the situation, BNP leaders and activists Swechasebak Dal organized a cleanup drive to remove the invasive vegetation.
The cleanup operation saw participation from several community leaders, including Aziz Morol, joint convener of the Upazila Swechasebak Dal; Mozammel Haque, president of the Chandpai Union Motso Jibi Dol; Jahangir, publicity secretary of the Upazila Motso Jibi Dol; Ishrat Sheikh, religious affairs secretary; Abu Naser, Jubo Dal leader of Chandpai Union; and Mohila Dal leader Nasima Begum.
Environmental experts note that while water hyacinth can provide habitat for aquatic life and absorb certain pollutants, excessive growth leads to oxygen depletion, foul odor, and disruption of water use for humans and livestock. The voluntary clearing of the pond has improved water quality, restored its usability, and been widely appreciated by the local community.
